A great deal of planning and work in Nashville home remodeling goes directly into kitchen remodels – perhaps more than remodels in any other area of the home. It’s always interesting to watch residential kitchen remodeling trends come and go. Broderick Builders has served as Nashville’s premier residential remodeling firm for over four decades now, and we’ve seen a virtually endless stream of kitchen renovation trends. We typically write at least two or three articles every year about some of the Nashville kitchen remodeling trends we are seeing – and of course, building.
We cannot include each and every kitchen design feature that happens to be popular at the time, but this is a substantial list covering a wide variety of work being done in Middle Tennessee kitchens. We hope you find this list useful, and as always, you are more than welcome to leave comments or ask questions.
The ideal kitchen backsplash serves two major purposes: Function and aesthetics, and not necessarily in that order. Your kitchen backsplash is functional by way of an easy-to-clean surface around cooking and prep areas, and by being large enough to catch even the furthest cooking splatters.
The backsplash can be transformed into a truly notable feature by covering an entire wall in your chosen material. In modern kitchens, tiles really do the job – and there’s a wide variety you can use for your next kitchen remodeling project.
With such an oversized backsplash, you will be able to get creative with colors and unique textures. You could even use your backsplash wall to counterbalance a dark kitchen – or a light-colored backsplash to brighten a dark kitchen. In recent years, many kitchens are being remodeled into all-white kitchens and also kitchens that are mostly black.

Kitchen and dining areas have always been closely connected, and recent seasons have experienced a trend where folks in these areas of the home can move freely to and from outdoor living spaces. This is often referred to as indoor-outdoor flow.
Achieving an effortless indoor-outdoor flow can make your home feel larger, more open, and more welcoming. Installing large sliding-glass doors or folding (accordion-style) doors can improve entertaining spaces for spring, summer, and fall.
We at Broderick Builders can help you to design an indoor/outdoor flow that makes your deck or patio area feel like an extension of your kitchen and dining room. It’s great for entertaining guests and family time alike. It’s part of the overall open design trend that has been with us for years. (Open designs are a little less popular in the pandemic age, however.)
Update the look and feel of your kitchen starting with your floor. While hardwood floors are often seen as the ultimate choice for the fine kitchen, ceramic tiles are much more affordable and easier to maintain than hardwood flooring.
Ceramics are coming back into the mainstream for kitchen design. Homeowners love the convenience, the premium feel, and the resilience to water and other spills they get with ceramic tiling. One definite pro of ceramic tile is that there’s an incredible degree of variation in tile. You can choose designer ceramic tiles with rich patterns and coloring; or, you could choose the classic all-white or a light and dark, contrasting checkerboard design if you are aiming for a trendier style.
Choosing ceramic tiles for your kitchen will probably significantly cut your flooring costs when compared to hardwood flooring, and your long-term maintenance savings will provide much value over your kitchen’s lifetime.

Countertop choices often make a big difference in kitchen remodels. Those seeking the perfect combination of cost and beauty often choose quartz countertops.
Quartz is incredibly long lasting – and the maintenance requirements are minimal. Quartz is generally more affordable than natural marble or stone, yet it can provide a similar high-end look and feel.
As nice as those quartz advantages are, perhaps the biggest advantage of deciding on quartz for a kitchen remodel is the incredible versatility in possible choices. Remember, quartz counters are not cut from large slabs of stone like marble; quartz is manufactured, so quartz kitchen counters can be created in a wide variety of styles, colors, and patterns – at least one of which that will suits your overall kitchen design theme.
