What do Madonna & Nashville remodeling have in common?
I know… it’s Monday morning, and maybe your coffee hasn’t kicked in yet, but can you think of what the similarities are between Madonna & home remodeling?
No, not those. We aren’t putting cones on top of a house; but you’ve got to admit, Madonna has displayed an amazing ability to reinvent herself over the years. She changes her style, her look, her hair, adds cones… Well, your home can be done the same (well, not quite…) way, and it begins by stepping back and envisioning some changes you’d like to see implemented. It happens all the time: a family starts in a house that works very well at first. But as the family evolves, the environment gets cramped, or their living styles, incomes, hobbies, etc. change – yet the house remains the same.
If you have been in your home for at least five years, the chances are pretty good that you need a change somewhere… It’s time to pull a Madonna!
So, with that silliness (mostly) behind us, here are five steps you can take on your road to reinventing your home:
1. Do a thoughtful, objective walk-through of your home.
Walk all over your house with an objective eye, look for patterns, consider needs, and take some notes. Reconsider entry points into the home. Have piles of stuff accumulated in certain areas? Are you frustrated by a lack of electrical outlets, storage space, etc.?
2. Declutter.
Go through your home and do a bit of de-cluttering. Old papers, the fridge door (this can make it seem much cleaner), take stuff to the local Goodwill, put the books away, get rid of appliances you never use, etc.
3. Get inspired.
Grab a home magazine, look at home ideas on Pinterest (open a Pinterest account if you don’t already have one; it’s free, and it’s chock full of beautiful photos), find your perfect paint color at the local paint store, and ask your family what they would change about the house if they could.

4. Create a rough budget.
There are many things you can do on a shoestring budget to reinvent your home: Choose a new rug, paint a room, or buy a piece of artsy furniture… If the changes you are wanting to make seem more significant, you can do them too.
5. Call your trusty Nashville home re-inventor!
