In this article, we will look at some of the very latest trends in the roofing materials being used in Nashville home remodeling.
As a key element of any home, roofing material manufacturers and related roofing companies continually seek creative, new ways to build even better roofs… roofs that will look better, last longer, be reasonably priced, and so on. In recent years, we’ve seen more, new, and better flat roofs; we’ve seen a greater variety of shingle colors – especially the lighter tones. More solar panels are being installed than ever before – and they are of much higher quality than older solar panels. There has always been a quest for brand new synthetic materials to use in roofing, and this search will continue.
When you think of roofing materials, do you think of concrete? Not this guy; concrete driveways and foundation slabs would be about it for concrete. Formerly the domain of industrial complexes, warehouses, and schools, concrete roofing has definitely arrived on the Nashville residential remodeling scene. Indeed, concrete roofing has advanced so substantially that it can be manufactured to resemble the various kinds of tiles already popular in Nashville home remodels, from composite shingle tiles to clay tiles.

There are at least four major advantages or selling points when it comes to concrete roofing. It is:
Concrete tiles are supremely versatile – plus, they are less expensive than actual clay tiles. However, concrete tiles have a predictably heavy weight – usually somewhat lighter than clay tiles, but heavier than the rest.
Solar panels themselves are certainly not new; they’ve existed in various forms since being developed. However, what we have now* is a burgeoning, expanding movement toward environmental sustainability and basic responsibility – true in the United States as well as around the world. With this maturing desire to develop an environmental conscience, we’re seeing a boom in the popularity of solar panel “tiles.”
There are many reasons for this solar panel boom, one of them being the development of more attractive solar panels that more closely resemble asphalt shingle tiles. As a result, in 2021 we finally have truly marketable, truly desirable solar panels – attractive to most folks these days regardless of political party and whether or not one happens to be environmentally conscious. Solar panels now make economic sense. Indeed, manufacturers have found and will continue to devise many ways to improve solar panels. It is increasingly hard to come up with reasons to avoid solar panels.

Metal roofing is not new, but metal roofs are extremely popular and trendy these days. Better able to withstand hail and other extreme weather conditions, metal roofing does not come cheap. (For whatever reasons, it seems just about every metal roof I notice is green in color. Why is that? We’ll tell you why in an upcoming roofing article.)
The two types of roofing materials made of wood are wood shake and wood shingles. It is certainly the most ancient roofing material on our list. The homeowner’s choice for hundreds of years in Europe and elsewhere, more and more Nashville homeowners are discovering the very distinctive appearance of wood shingles and shakes. Interestingly, wood shingles and wood shakes gradually fade and turn an attractive shade of gray as the roofing material ages and weathers. Wood shakes are virtually always handmade and somewhat rougher in appearance than shingles. Wood shingles are typically machined. Shakes thus turn out to be thicker than wood shingles.
Offering true aesthetic beauty as well as an elegant and distinctive appearance, slate roofing tiles are available in colors including various shades of black, grey, and green.
